Experiential Learning

Elizabeth Academy Secondary students are future world changers. Our students spend considerable time taking their learning from the classroom to the community and visa versa. We embed learning experiences throughout our curriculum. From our annual Service Week, before the Winter Break, to immersive literary and history experiences through the arts, like attending plays and exhibitions, we bring learning alive through experience. Our students also have the option to participate in school trips, taking learning far beyond the classroom!

  • A highlight and seminal event at Elizabeth Academy, Camp Oakley is located near Oakley by the beautiful and serene Weber River. This is where our whole secondary school gathers at the beginning of each school year, immersed in nature, to bond as friends and teachers— strengthening ties, staying over a few nights, camping, hiking, and fishing in the wilderness— laughing and learning along the way. This community building event takes place the first few weeks of school; and is always a favorite among students and staff!

  • Our field experiences, like field trips, are all curriculum-aligned. Students go on local excursions to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the subjects they are studying in the classroom. Field experiences bring the learning to life- and allow students to see the application of the concepts they study in the real world. Additionally, we believe in providing practical opportunities such as volunteerism or internships. This exposure generates interest and whets the appetite for potential vocations in the future.

  • The purpose of Spring Trips is to take learning beyond the classroom and strengthen our community. We venture to places like Boston, Washington D.C., and Gettysburg to gain a deeper understanding of US History and Government. The middle school explores wilderness areas all over Utah and learns about the diversity of Utah wildlife, discovering its geological secrets and beauty. Our high school dives deeply into marine sciences on Catalina Island in California. All of our classroom studies are integrated into these final explorations outside the classroom in our end-of-year trips!

ARTS PROGRAM - Visual Art, Music, Dance, Theatre/Film

Elizabeth Academy Secondary School has a robust arts program which includes the four main art disciplines:

INTEGRATED ACADEMIC & ARTS LEARNING and CREATIVE EXPANSIONS

Art fosters creativity and expression, reinforces learning, and increases student engagement. Through our collaborative teaching model, content teachers work hand-in-hand with art specialists to reinforce and vitalize learning through the arts. At Elizabeth Academy, instruction does not only happen in an isolated classroom- it is integral to the education we provide. Students explore academic themes/concepts, and develop mastery of academic skills through the arts all throughout their day. Art opens the door for all students to access challenging concepts while immersing them in learning.

The arts facilitate conceptual understanding, while building community and sparking ingenuity for students of all ages and abilities. Creative expression reaches students of various learning styles— spatial visual, auditory/musical, and kinesthetic learning. Arts integration is a fundamental aspect of our teaching and learning and is integral to our inclusive academic environment.

VISUAL ART, MUSIC, DANCE, THEATRE/FILM.

The arts are an amazingly powerful vehicle to demonstrate and reinforce learning. The key concepts of these art disciplines are taught conscientiously and sequentially, giving students the confidence to move forward, advancing and applying their skills creatively to other areas. Art teachers and therapists in the arts collaborate with teaching teams to develop engaging and multi-sensorial curriculum and instruction. Students expand their knowledge and understanding through fine-art fundamentals and explore their most creative and expressive selves through the arts. We collaborate with some of the most esteemed artisans in the community, including Salt Lake Community College and Tanner Dance at the University of Utah. The arts enrich academic study, enabling students to become well-rounded individuals who can apply their knowledge and skills in their post-secondary lives, either as skilled artists or technicians in the arts, or by creatively applying arts innovation to other fields.

  • Peer Mentoring & Leadership

Some of us are born to be leaders, but all of us are born to be contributors. Peer mentoring is something we all can do, especially at Elizabeth Academy, and leadership is strengthened intentionally through our Peer Mentoring program and Student Government at Elizabeth Academy. Advanced students are encouraged to receive honors credits by serving as classroom guides in our Peer Mentoring program. This hands-on experience sets our students apart— not only from other candidates applying for competitive colleges, but as true contributors to society. As acumen is sharpened and refined when we are tasked to “teach,” this is a great opportunity to further advance skills in leadership, as well as social-emotional intelligence. The greatest leaders are those who can help others to see the light within themselves and pass that light on to others.

  • Prep for LIFE

Beginning in Middle School, students at Elizabeth Academy Secondary are guided to prepare for life after high school. Job skills are taught and vocational interests are piqued, preparatory to offerings that might be included in High School studies (vocational courses at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) for certificates that can be applied to college credit, concurrent enrollment for credit at SLCC or the University of Utah). Micro-economy courses are offered and our College and Careers program explores options and opportunities for further educational pursuits and/or occupations so that students are prepared to leave our school with the confidence they need to embark upon their own personal post-secondary journey.
